TABI- INTERCULTURAL DANCE PROJECT

Tabi is dance-research-project. The project is being designed by the participants Valentina Nicoli (IT) and Maria Kirchhoff (DE) and will be delivered in collaboration with Béla Bisom (DE). Under the artistic direction of choreographer Takao Baba, who is assisted by Rayboom and Kofie, the youth dance company of Tanzhaus nrw – Back to Basics (B2B) – will be engaged with Japanese cultural heritage as well as contemporary cultural practices and meet the Japanese community based in Düsseldorf. The aim is to facilitate an intensive intercultural exchange. This experience will then foster a creative physical process in the dance studios of Tanzhaus nrw in order to gain new movement material, which will be presented to the public on Sun 12th April 18:00. The duration of the project is March-April 2015.

The project is divided into two parts: the first one is focused on cultural activities that will be experienced inside the Japanese community; in collaboration with Japanische Club Düsseldorf, Eko Haus and Kultur- und Informationsbüro des Japanischen Generalkonsulats. The second part will take place at Tanzhaus nrw, where the dancers will work on the artistic elaboration of the cultural material collected.

Takao Baba (DE) was raised in Düsseldorf as the sun of a Japanese couple. He is an urban dancer, teacher and choreographer, whose last piece Rōnin – made in Germany recently premiered at tanzhaus nrw in January 2015. He is well known as an international host of Hip Hop battles and is part of the IDAS nrw artists service along with his crew E-Motion.

Back To Basic is the new youth dance company under the direction of tanzhaus nrw. The young dancers are between 12 and 18 years old and started their daily training in October 2014 with the two hip hop dancers Kofie and Rayboom. The young dancers are also constantly involved in workshop with local and international choreographers of tanzhaus nrw. Their first presentation took place in January 2015.
